Charlie: O grande ditador



Sir Charles Chaplin, também conhecido como Charlie Chaplin o gajo a preto e branco que fez rir o mundo inteiro com os seus filmes mudos e criou uma das figuras intemporais que marcou o inicio do cinema. Mas o meu objectivo neste post não é falar desse ícone nem da personagem que criou nem dar uma biografia detalhada, para os curiosos podem sempre consultar o IMDB e ficar a conhece-lo um pouco melhor.

O que vou falar mesmo neste post é de um dos seus melhores filmes, e o seu primeiro filme que não é mudo, realizado por ele e onde se desdobra em duas personagens que nada têm haver uma com outra (felizmente nessa altura ainda não havia o cliché dos dois irmãos gémeos separados a nascença sendo um bom e o outro mau), um é um judeu que lutou na primeira guerra mundial e que no fim de guerra entra em coma após o acidente mais cómico de avião da historia do cinema. Passados 15 anos acorda e regressa a sua terra natal, Tomania que é agora dominado pelo ditador Adenoid Hynkel também interpretado por Charlie que quer exterminar todos os judeus. As semelhanças com a historia nazi não são apenas coincidências.

No ano de 1937 Alexander Korda numa conversa com Charlie diz-lhe que ele tem uma grande parecença física com Adolf Hitler. Esta conversa levou Charlie a fazer uma pesquisa sobre Hitler onde descobre que os seus nascimentos são separados apenas por uma semana, ambos foram extremamente pobres até alcancerem o sucesso nas suas áreas e que as suas semelhanças acabam aí. Descobre então a politica racial de Hitler decidindo então usar as suas semelhanças para fazer o filme O grande ditador com o objectivo de ridicularizar Hitler.

É preciso referir que em 1937 quando o filme começou a ser produzido a segunda guerra mundial ainda não tinha iniciado e que Hitler ainda não era visto como uma grande ameaça. O filme estreou 3 anos mais tarde em 1940 quando o mundo já estava em guerra.

É claro que não vou revelar aqui os pormenores do filme para não estragar o vosso desejo de ver o filme, quem conhece os filmes dele já sabe que vai haver inúmeras gags, vou apenas falar da cena final. E ao contrario do que é normal o facto de falar na cena final não irá estragar o vosso apetite de ver o filme, bem antes pelo contrario pois a cena final não é mais do que um discurso onde Charlie se despe das suas personagens e faz um dos melhores discursos da historia (Se achavam que o discurso de Braveheart é o melhor da historia do cinema desenganem-se). É preciso referir que Charlie alterou o final original do filme para esta versão quando soube da invasão da França pelos Alemães:

The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it is written that the kingdom of God is within man, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite!"
